Styrmand invests in real-time information systems competence

With Magne Bentzen joining Styrmand we are focusing on projects related to real-time systems for public transport. (24/11/2011)

Real-time information systems (SIS) is a term for technological systems which contribute to improved information to users of public transport. This information is typically prognosis for actual departure time from the stop/embarkation point, in practice planned drive time from the last recorded position to the relevant stop. Information about deviations and disruptions to the planned departure time is communicated as needed to the people planning to travel from bus stops, train platforms, on board the vehicles/trains, on information boards, on websites, on smartphones and on other relevant places.

SIS-prosjects have many complex factors which are now considered in planning and execution to accomplish a certain result. A good total overview with knowledge about critical details in the value chain is necessary to enable successful delivery of these types of projects. There is a lot to be gained by reusing experience and solutions from other players in Norway and abroad who has been through this before.

Magne Bentzen is a past project manager at Trafikanten which has had great success with building and rolling out SIS since 2004.

The experience is that the system lowers the threshold for traveling via public transport. The public find it easier to orient themselves. Up to date information at key connection points enables travelers to be more impulsive; they no longer need to have the whole trip planned out in advance.
